EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
An honors graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, Cherí practiced civil litigation at Baker Botts, LLP and Stuart PC. In 2016, Cheri was named a Principal at Stuart PC. In private practice, Cherí represented clients in state and federal courts all over the country. Cherí also provided pro bono legal services to nonprofit organizations and individuals who could not afford legal representation.
Cherí has also worked as an attorney in the courts, supporting federal and state judges. After law school, Cherí worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Jorge Solis of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Before deciding to run to become a justice, Cherí worked on numerous civil and criminal appeals as a staff attorney for the Fourteenth Court of Appeals.
In 2019, Cheri was elected as a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. The Foundation is the largest charitably funded bar foundation in the country. Every year, the top one-third of one percent of Texas attorneys are invited to become Fellows. Members are nominated because of their dedication to the administration of justice and high professional standing among their peers.
Cherí was also named a “Rising Star” in Texas Super Lawyers magazine five times.
Cheri is a native Texan, born and raised in the Houston area. As one of eleven children in a blended family, Cherí took on significant responsibilities at a young age. Cherí is now a proud wife and mother. She has been married to her husband Lewis Thomas for 17 years. Together, Cherí and Lewis have three amazing daughters and one fuzzy Samoyed.
ABOUT THE COURT
The Fourteenth Court of Appeals is an intermediate appellate court that serves Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. Located in the historic 1910 Courthouse in downtown Houston, Texas, the Fourteenth Court is composed of nine justices who hear appeals and original proceedings. The Fourteenth Court has jurisdiction over both civil and criminal appeals from lower courts in ten counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller, and Washington.
